Susan Johnson was first elected to the legislature in November of 2008.
Susan graduated from Eastern Connecticut State University, and has worked as an advocate for Medicare beneficiaries at Connecticut Legal Services and at the Center for Medicare Advocacy for almost twenty years. She subsequently graduated from the Western New England College of Law and is in private practice in partnership with her husband, Dennis O’Brien in the firm of O’Brien & Johnson in Willimantic.
As a Town of Windham selectman, Susan Johnson chaired the utilities committee and the Mid Northeast Recycling Operating Committee, which created the first regional hazardous waste recycling center in Willington. Susan helped create the Julia De Burgos Poetry Park, heralded in the New York Times. She secured funding for a housing code enforcement officer. Dedicated to the preservation of our environment, Susan Johnson currently serves as chairman of the inland wetlands and watercourses commission for the Town of Windham.
For six years, Susan and her husband have co-hosted “Let’s Talk About It,” a popular weekly public affairs show on WILI-AM radio, Willimantic, which Susan helped launch a decade ago.
Susan is a member of the Connecticut Bar Association, Windham County Bar Association, the American Legion Auxiliary, Willimantic Elks Lodge #1311 and the Windham Democratic Town Committee.
Representative Johnson is pleased to serve as Co-chair of the Public Health Committee and as a member of the Finance, Revenue and Bonding, Education and Insurance & Real Estate Committees. Rep. Johnson also Co-Chairs the English Language Learners legislative Task Force and has been appointed by Senator Don Williams to the Council on Medical Assistance Program Oversight.
